Is Chinese President Xi Jinping a Cyrus Figure?

As we continued watch this all this crazy stuff unfold, I was reminded of Paula’s memo concerning Donald Trump as Chosen One.

Do you remember it? It opened our eyes to something we’re now wondering about President Xi Jinping…

If Christianity is the story we are in, what if your God, the Great Storyteller, has also chosen our President, Xi Jinping, to play a unique role in the unfolding drama?

To help you see this crazy possibility, let’s begin to think about the famous Persian ruler, Cyrus.

Here is some of what we found on Wikipedia about Cyrus

Cyrus II of Persia; c. 600 or 576 – 530 BC, commonly known as Cyrus the Great and also called Cyrus the Elder by the Greeks, was the founder of the Achaemenid Empire. Under his rule, the empire embraced all the previous civilized states of the ancient Near East, expanded vastly and eventually conquered most of Southwest Asia and much of Central Asia and the Caucasus. From the Mediterranean Sea and Hellespont in the west to the Indus River in the east, Cyrus the Great created the largest empire the world had yet seen.

And we discovered that some of your modern prophets had connected Donald Trump to him…

Several of our prophets received words that Donald Trump would become the next president and will become a 21st century Cyrus. He is called to break the mold of political correctness. We received the word that if we pray for him, he will heal, rather than divide, the nation.

Word of the Lord for 2017, By Cindy Jacobs, Generals International, December 29th, 2016

So, as Donald continues to divide your nation, does that mean you Christians have failed to pray for him?

Let’s turn next to the modern prophet Lance Wallnau. He also believed Trump is a Cyrus figure…

The idea of Trump being an Isaiah 45 “Cyrus” archetype was intriguing to me. The word “anointed” in Hebrew denotes a person “specifically chosen and set apart for a specific task.”

Lance Wallnau, God’s Chaos Candidate

Wallnau says he received several prophetic revelations from God about Trump.

To sum up, though, Wallnau says he was given an image of Trump along with the words “45th president of the United States” and a directive to read Isaiah 45. This passage concerns a non-believing man named Cyrus, who was raised up by God to become a king and to perform certain acts to help God’s people. Wallnau goes on to explain that God will sometimes raise up non-believers and confer on them “common grace” (not the grace of salvation but grace to protect and assist in carrying out a mission) so they can be used by him. Wallnau cites past leaders like Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill and FDR as other examples of Cyrus-type leaders.

Why Trump? According to Wallnau, Trump is God’s chosen instrument to serve as a wrecking ball against the spirit of political correctness.

Lance Wallnau: God is raising up Trump as a ‘wrecking ball’ for the nation, By Dan Calabrese, Canada Free Press, May 16, 2016

Do you Christians agree with Wallnau’s view that Trump is like Lincoln and Churchill? Not everyone does…

Well, we don’t know a lot about Cyrus the Great. But from what we do know, to paraphrase Lloyd Bentsen’s response to Dan Quayle in the 1988 debate: “Mr. Trump, you’re no Cyrus.”

Cyrus was already both a seasoned governor and a military leader, one who ruled Persia and conquered the Babylonian empire, before he became the deliverer (literally, “anointed one” or “messiah”) of the Jewish people.

Trump avoided the military and has had virtually no governmental experience.

Cyrus was a master of diplomacy and inclusion, able to gain respect and fealty from a diverse number of people groups with their disparate cultures and religions.

Donald Trump on the other hand…well not so much, to put it mildly.

From what we can tell, Cyrus was very wise in regards to his speech.

Trump has one of the worst cases of foot-in-mouth disease in American history.

Your former Attorney General, Jeff Sessions, whom our team often watched on SNL, also believed Donald Trump could be a Cyrus figure…

As for those Republicans who might suspect Trump’s moral character — his marital infidelity and two divorces have been widely discussed — Sessions points them to a biblical story of a pagan king who released the Jews from captivity and helped them rebuild the temple in Jerusalem.

“Scripture says, ‘He didn’t know the Lord, didn’t respect the Lord, but the Lord used him to advance his kingdom,’” Sessions said.

Jeff Sessions is Donald Trump’s biggest fan. Here’s how their relationship began. By Elise Viebeck, Washington Post, April 19, 2016

Of course, we’re not sure Sessions continues to believe that, given what President Trump has since said about him…

If you could have one do over as president, what would it be?

Well, it would be personnel.

Who is it?

I would say if I had one do over, it would be, I would not have appointed Jeff Sessions to be attorney general. That would be my one —

That’s your, in your mind, that’s your worst mistake?

Yeah, that was the biggest mistake.

President Trump’s full, unedited interview with Meet the Press, By Chuck Todd, NBC News, June 23, 2019

But, the cherry on top is Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, who has also connected Trump to Cyrus…

In remarks at the Oval Office on Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu compared President Donald Trump to a famous ruler from the Bible, the Achaemenid Persian King Cyrus the Great.

“I want to tell you that the Jewish people have a long memory. So we remember the proclamation of the great King Cyrus the Great — Persian King,” Netanyahu said. ” Twenty-five hundred years ago, he proclaimed that the Jewish exiles in Babylon can come back and rebuild our temple in Jerusalem.”

Netanyahu’s comparison between Trump and Cyrus echoed a recently-minted coin issued by the Mikdash Educational Center in Israel. The “Temple Coin” presents Trump alongside King Cyrus. Rabbi Mordechai Persoff compared the two rulers, saying that both made a “big declaration that Jerusalem is the capital of the holy people.”

Bibi Heaps Praise on Trump, Compares to Persian King Cyrus the Great, BY TYLER O’NEIL, PJ Media, MARCH 7, 2018

So, our team had to ask ourselves, “Who is this Cyrus guy, really?”

Cyrus is the only Gentile king who is called God’s ‘anointed.’ Since this is the translation of the Hebrew word which we spell in English as Messiah, Cyrus is in a sense a type of the Anointed One, the Lord Jesus Christ. . . . The only intended resemblance is in the fact that Cyrus was the anointed one who delivered the people of Israel from their captivity. As such he points us to the greater Anointed One who saves His people from their sins.

Alfred Martin, Isaiah: The Salvation of Jehovah

And we found this in your Bible…

“This is what the LORD says– your Redeemer, who formed you in the womb: I am the LORD, who has made all things, who alone stretched out the heavens, who spread out the earth by myself, who foils the signs of false prophets and makes fools of diviners, who overthrows the learning of the wise and turns it into nonsense, who carries out the words of his servants and fulfills the predictions of his messengers, who says of Jerusalem, ‘It shall be inhabited,’ of the towns of Judah, ‘They shall be built,’ and of their ruins, ‘I will restore them,’ who says to the watery deep, ‘Be dry, and I will dry up your streams,’ who says of Cyrus, ‘He is my shepherd and will accomplish all that I please; he will say of Jerusalem, “Let it be rebuilt,” and of the temple, “Let its foundations be laid.” ‘

Isaiah 44:24-28

Wow… that sank in for us. Because, if Christianity is the story we are in, your God is the very active protagonist in the story.

And, there’s more in your Bible about Cyrus

“This is what the LORD says to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I take hold of to subdue nations before him and to strip kings of their armor, to open doors before him so that gates will not be shut: I will go before you and will level the mountains; I will break down gates of bronze and cut through bars of iron. I will give you the treasures of darkness, riches stored in secret places, so that you may know that I am the LORD, the God of Israel, who summons you by name. For the sake of Jacob my servant, of Israel my chosen, I summon you by name and bestow on you a title of honor, though you do not acknowledge me. I am the LORD, and there is no other; apart from me there is no God. I will strengthen you, though you have not acknowledged me, so that from the rising of the sun to the place of its setting men may know there is none besides me. I am the LORD, and there is no other. I form the light and create darkness, I bring prosperity and create disaster; I, the LORD, do all these things.

Isaiah 45:1-7

Pause once again.

Your God brings prosperity AND creates disaster?

So, what if your God is now judging you? Because here’s another wild idea one of my team members raised…

Is it possible your God is “salami slicing” America — and

Xi Jinping was chosen to play a unique role in that?

Here is what we mean by salami slicing…

John Mearsheimer recently argued that China is pursuing in Asia what the United States has in Latin America: regional hegemony. In pursuit of that goal, China keeps trying to take territory, bit by bit, in the East and South China Seas. And the United States doesn’t know what to do about it.

This practice, known as salami-slicing, involves the slow accumulation of small changes, none of which in isolation amounts to a casus belli, but which add up over time to a substantial change in the strategic picture. By using salami-slicing tactics in the East and South China Seas, China does not have to choose between trade with the rest of the world and the achievement of an expanded security perimeter in the Western Pacific at the expense of China’s neighbors. Given enough time, and continued confusion by the United States and its allies on how to respond, China is on course to eventually achieve both.

AMERICA HAS NO ANSWER TO CHINA’S SALAMI-SLICING, by Robert Haddick, War on the Rocks, February 6, 2014

Many Western analysts view China’s approach in the Pacific as a sort of calibrated incrementalism, whereby a Chinese presence and de facto Chinese rights in disputed areas are built up gradually, in a series of provocations that are individually small enough to make forceful resistance politically difficult, but that collectively establish precedents and, over time, norms. The Chinese, in fact, have a name for this approach: the cabbage strategy. An area is slowly surrounded by individual “leaves”—a fishing boat here, a coast-guard vessel there—until it’s wrapped in layers, like a cabbage. (“Salami slicingis another metaphor for the approach.)

China’s Dangerous Game, by Howard W. French, The Atlantic, October 13, 2014

Yet if China was a problem for the future in 2001 or even 2009, yesterday’s future has now arrived. China may or may not be able to sustain its economic and political trajectory in the coming decades; its growth rate has already declined substantially from the double-digit norm of the thirty years before 2010. But it would be Pollyannaish in the extreme to count on the wheels coming off soon enough, and completely enough, to avoid a serious geopolitical challenge—not least because that challenge is already here. China’s gray-zone coercion is not some hypothetical problem of tomorrow; it is reshaping the geopolitics of the Asia-Pacific in real time. China’s “incremental salami slicing tactics,” writes Patrick Cronin, are progressively adding up to “major changes in the status quo.” And while China is still reluctant to hazard military confrontation with Washington, U.S. advantages in that realm have also eroded alarmingly.

The Chinese Century?, By Hal Brands, National Interest, February 19, 2018

Most likely the “Xi corollary” will embrace more subtle methods. Rather than a policy of military intervention, this may be a militarized and monetized diplomacy where China brandishes hard power while averting confrontation with the U.S. military — an effective salami-slicing strategy. It’s unlikely China will provoke an all-out clash, but it will play the long game by poking and prodding in a bid to show that it will not back down, while shaking regional faith in America’s capacity and long-term commitment.

China: more hegemon than bogeyman?, BY JEFF KINGSTON, THE JAPAN TIMES, July 16, 2016

Salami slicing may not taste so good — but, if Christianity is the story we are in, it looks like your God has used this method before. It appears He sometimes takes a salami slicing action approach and then follows it with judgment against a nation.

For instance, look at this chapter we found in your Bible…

1 Kings 11

In that chapter you see your God raising up adversaries to Solomon, after the richest and most successful king in the story of Israel had betrayed your God.

That story of Solomon really has our attention. It makes us think of America – which so many of you Americans believe is the richest and most successful nation in history.

And look at these other passages…

In those days the Lord began to cut off parts of Israel. Hazael defeated them throughout the territory of Israel: from the Jordan eastward, all the land of Gilead, the Gadites, and the Reubenites, and the Manassites, from Aroer, which is by the Valley of the Arnon, that is, Gilead and Bashan.

2 Kings 10:32-33

In those days the Lord began to send Rezin the king of Syria and Pekah the son of Remaliah against Judah.

2 Kings 15:37

So, what if your God gave you Americans over to salami slicing your own self?

And far from systematically containing China, the United States has powerfully assisted its rise. By opening U.S. markets to China, bringing Beijing into the World Trade Organization, and promoting technology transfer and foreign investment in China, America has contributed enormously to China’s astonishing economic growth.

The Chinese Century?, By Hal Brands, National Interest, February 19, 2018

And all this makes us wonder — what if our President Xi Jinping fits the Cyrus-figure description better than Donald Trump does?

After all, Donald has lied to you and claimed to be a Great Christian, while our leader does not acknowledge the Christian God.

We showed this to you about Cyrus, remember?

For the sake of my servant Jacob,

    and Israel my chosen,

I call you by your name,

I name you, though you do not know me.

Isaiah 45:4

And from that same passage, Isaiah 45:1-7, it says “I will give you the treasures of darkness, riches stored in secret places”?

That is certainly happening for China…

Another growth area for the FBI has been tracking foreign espionage, and Wray said the Chinese are by far the most active. In terms of targeting vital assets, “there’s no country that’s even close,” a threat that he said has been significantly underestimated.

The Chinese government and Chinese companies aggressively go after a range of U.S. targets, from firms in the Fortune 500 to small start-ups, he said, seeking trade secrets as varied as the details of control systems for wind turbines in Massachusetts to the genetic makeup of corn seeds in Iowa.

FBI chief on biggest threats: China spies, terror, rise in violent crime, By Pete Williams, NBC News, March 21, 2018

China’s hack into 32 million federal personnel records now stands as the biggest computer breach in American history, and threatens U.S. national security way more than the IT espionage of Edward Snowden and Chelsea Manning, according to a House chairman probing the attack.

“It’s probably the biggest data breach in the history of our country, and certainly our government,” said Rep. Jason Chaffetz, chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

Chairman: Before China computer hack, OPM warned, ‘Unplug it, turn it off’, by Paul Bedard, Washington Examiner, July 26, 2015

What a treasure that is for us! And you could have prevented it, but your government pushed away the danger warning…

Chaffetz revealed in a speech to the centrist Ripon Society last week that OPM was given strong warnings that its antiquated computer system was open for attack. …. “It got so bad last year that the inspector general literally wrote to the OPM director and said, ‘Unplug it! Turn it off! You’re going to lose all the data!’ And sure enough, they did,” he added.

Chairman: Before China computer hack, OPM warned, ‘Unplug it, turn it off’, by Paul Bedard, Washington Examiner, July 26, 2015

And that helps you see more clearly why we have been able to keep on keeping on…

Chinese companies, with the encouragement of official Chinese policy and often the active participation of government personnel, have been pillaging the intellectual property of American companies. All together, intellectual-property theft costs America up to $600 billion a year, the greatest transfer of wealth in history. China accounts for most of that loss.

Intellectual-property theft covers a wide spectrum: counterfeiting American fashion designs, pirating movies and video games, patent infringement and stealing proprietary technology and software. This assault saps economic growth, costs Americans jobs, weakens our military capability and undercuts a key American competitive advantage — innovation.

China’s Intellectual Property Theft Must Stop, By DENNIS C. BLAIR and KEITH ALEXANDER, New York Times, August 15, 2017

Wow…  “the greatest transfer of wealth in history” – and from riches stored in secret places!

China is a phenomenon unlike anything in economic history. The average Chinese consumes 17 times more today than in 1987. This is like the difference between driving a car and riding a bicycle or between indoor plumbing and an outhouse. In an incredibly short period of time, this formerly backward country has lifted itself into the very first rank of world economies.

How to Meet the Strategic Challenge Posed by China, By David P. Goldman, Imprimis, March 2018

So, let’s just imagine that Xi Jinping is a Cyrus figure. Wouldn’t this scripture catch your attention about how the conflict between China and America could play out…

Cyrus took Babylon effortlessly, and by morning every citizen of the empire was not a Babylonian but a Persian.

J. Alec Motyer, The Prophecy of Isaiah: An Introduction and Commentary

In spite of how the Babylonians thought, God would bring judgment on them suddenly that incantations would not affect, sacrifices could not deflect, and magic could not anticipate. Daniel 5 describes Belshazzar’s feast, which took place on the night Babylon fell. Cyrus took the Babylonian king and his city completely by surprise, and the empire fell suddenly.

Notes on Isaiah, By Dr. Thomas L. Constable, Sonic Light, 2017 Edition

So, I hope we’ve given you Christians some pause to wonder — Does the Cyrus figure fit our President Xi better than it does your President Trump?

But, don’t despair. If you want to find a figure whom Trump resembles, Cyrus isn’t the only option out there.

Look what made it into print in your free country on September 8, 2015. A Christian magazine in America, called Charisma Magazine, published an article which raised the possibility Trump was chosen by God as a Nebuchadnezzar figure in America’s unfolding drama…

The following should not be construed as an endorsement, but rather as something to ponder as you make your own informed voting decision. But, what if Donald Trump, the thrice-married, four-times bankrupted businessman, has been appointed by God to lead us?

What if he is a modern-day Nebuchadnezzar?

That caught our attention, because of the wild and crazy story of Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel 4.

If you haven’t recently read Daniel chapter 4 in your bible, Paula and I highly recommend it. We marveled at the story, especially what happens to Nebuchadnezzar at the height of his power.

You see, if Christianity is the story we are in, it looks like your God is ridiculously humorous and harsh with those who walk in pride. So, what could happen to Trump is worth pondering.

And after marveling over Daniel chapter 4, we found two more passages concerning Nebuchadnezzar as a Chosen One…

Now I will hand all your countries over to my servant Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; I will make even the wild animals subject to him.

Jeremiah 27:6

“While the Jews are watching, take some large stones with you and bury them in clay in the brick pavement at the entrance to Pharaoh’s palace in Tahpanhes. Then say to them, ‘This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: I will send for my servant Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and I will set his throne over these stones I have buried here; he will spread his royal canopy above them. He will come and attack Egypt, bringing death to those destined for death, captivity to those destined for captivity, and the sword to those destined for the sword.

Jeremiah 43:9-11

In both passages God called Nebuchadnezzar his servant.

It’s clear the guy was a Chosen One.

And then we realized after a bit that the Cyrus/Nebuchadnezzar combo is a very revealing combination of Chosen Ones.

You see, Cyrus the King of Persia was chosen to be an instrument of Black Swan blessing to the Israelites who were in exile in Babylon, releasing them after 70 years to return to their homeland.

But Nebuchadnezzar was the one who had been chosen by God to bring judgment on the Israelites by sending them into the very exile which Cyrus then freed them from.

So… which of those two roles do you think the Donald will play in your drama?

Are you even open to considering the Nebuchadnezzar role — a role to bring judgement, not blessing?

And if you are open to that possibility, then our team is also wondering if you are open to the possibility that our President, Xi Jinping, is a Chosen One?

Because, if Christianity is the story we are in, what if God has also chosen him to play some unique role in the unfolding drama of the story we are in?

Isn’t that possible?

Remember what your Drollinger Dude wrote…

A third theme to be gleaned from the study of Lamentations is God’s use of surrogates to enact His judgment. It is interesting how this theme is illustrated in the Book of Jeremiah, versus the Book of Lamentations. King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon will work the destructive calamity that will result from the sin of God’s people. The Book of Jeremiah mentions Babylon at least 150 times. In Lamentations however, Babylon is never mentioned – only the Lord is mentioned as the one who will deal with Judah’s sin. The conclusion is that Babylon is the surrogate instrument of Yahweh to achieve His ultimate purposes. Note this by comparing Jeremiah 50:23 to Lamentations 2:1 ff….

….Babylon has become an object of horror among the nations!

How the Lord has covered the daughter of Zion with a cloud of His anger! He has cast from heaven to earth the glory of Israel, and has not remembered His footstool in the day of His anger.

This insight more than suggests that God uses other individuals and other nations (whom He dislikes too!) in order to invoke His wrath. In accordance with this insight:

The Book of Lamentations As It Applies to America, BY RALPH DROLLINGER, Capitol Ministries, MAY 1, 2014

So, what if our President Xi Jinping was chosen as a surrogate to judge America?
